How to Read the Rate Monitor
The rate monitor covers a lot of ground. Here's where to focus:
Treasuries — Look for the Treasuries (YTW) section. This shows what the U.S. government is currently paying on short- and longer-term bonds. Rates are organized by term, from 3 months up to 30 years, so you can see what your money could earn depending on how long you're comfortable setting it aside.
Brokered CDs — Look for the Brokered CDs (YTW) section. These work similarly to a bank CD but are available through your investment account and often carry more competitive rates than what you’d find at a local bank.
Reading the columns — The Friday column reflects the current rate. Previous shows last week's rate, and 1-yr Ago gives you a sense of where rates stood a year ago — useful for seeing how much the opportunity has shifted.
What does YTW mean? YTW stands for Yield to Worst. Think of it as a conservative estimate of what your money will earn. It's a useful benchmark for comparing options.
